The hotel’s wood-drenched façade evokes a sense of gravitas and grandeur through its scale and volume. It is not a soaring glass tower, omnipresent in Tokyo, but a composition shaped by Kyoto’s strict height restrictions that capped at 31 metres
In recent years, I have evolved into a far more spontaneous traveller. I now intentionally refrain from vigorous research into every facet of a hotel upfront, aiming to preserve a shred of mystery. Armed with only a faint awareness of what lay ahead, I stepped into a property that weaves Thai legacy into Japanese refinement—a novel duo for me. Yet almost immediately, I could draw parallels: where a heritage-rich brand meets Japan’s ancient capital, a cultural fusion emerges, underpinned by enduring brand DNA, anchored in artistry and craftsmanship, and evolving gracefully in the contemporary age. As a result, my inaugural stay at Dusit Thani Kyoto—a multifaceted aesthetic and multilayered sensory experience—reverberated through my mind, etching itself permanently into my memory.
Palpable Synergy at First Sight: Where Heritage, Nature, and Contemporary Luxury Converge
The location quietly speaks to the hotel’s heritage, yet loudly affirms its contemporary comfort and livability—fully living up to its name as an urban retreat
It was an afternoon arrival. I have a strong affinity for hotels tucked away from the central business district—offering an instant escape from the city’s hustle without being completely off the grid. However, the seclusion and privacy offered by this location do not come at the cost of convenience: essential metrics for a traveller, such as transport and nearby attractions, remain effortlessly accessible. Dusit Thani Kyoto sits in close proximity to Kyoto Station, a short stroll from the historic Nishi Hongan-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and within easy walking distance of Higashi Hongan-ji, grounding the hotel in a neighbourhood where history seems to ooze from every corner. The location quietly speaks to the hotel’s heritage, yet loudly affirms its contemporary comfort and livability—fully living up to its name as an urban retreat.
The hotel’s wood-drenched façade evokes a sense of gravitas through its scale and volume. It is not a soaring glass tower, omnipresent in Tokyo, but a composition shaped by Kyoto’s strict height restrictions, capped at 31 metres. (Fun fact: Hotel Okura Kyoto, at around 60 metres, remains the tallest building in Kyoto, built before these regulations—lol.) Here, the property expands horizontally rather than vertically. Wooden façades—a quintessential material choice in Kyoto, and one that resonates deeply with my personal aesthetic—transform the hotel into a soothing and cocooning container, hinting at an enveloping, immersive experience.

Dusit Thani Kyoto's lobby features elegant blue ribbons hanging from the ceiling, embodying a blend of Japanese and Thai artistry with their indigo hues and garland-like arrangement, creating a serene and welcoming ambiance
The hotel entry is thoughtfully and strategically concealed, tucked into an inconspicuous spot and approached discreetly. An usher greeted me as the initial point of contact. The moment I stepped into the lobby, I was whisked into a spatial experience that was nothing short of a visual spectacle. At first glance, I was stunned by the lobby’s scale and grandeur. A cascading, ribbon-akin art installation suspended from the high ceiling made a striking statement, evoking a sense of movement and vitality. This dynamic energy is gently tempered by a window-framed courtyard garden that stretches from floor to ceiling.
A quick scan revealed that traditional elegance is intentionally embedded into every touchpoint, while contemporary flair is seamlessly woven into the architectural structure
A quick scan revealed that traditional elegance is intentionally embedded into every touchpoint,
while contemporary flair is seamlessly woven into the architectural structure. I felt a palpable Synergy with this curated space at first sight. As I meandered through the lobby, gazing into the design narrative and its elements, I was struck by the meticulous attention to detail, the exquisite taste in artwork selection, above all—the masterful amalgamation of architecture, interior, and nature. Plants and florals are artfully placed throughout, yet the introduction of a courtyard Zen garden within a grand hotel struck a particularly fresh chord in me.
The garden quietly holds the nuances and micro-changes of four seasons. I marveled at its serenity and tranquillity, in awe of its subdued and divine presence
Within the atrium, where architecture, nature, and light converge. Contemporary luxury is shaped through form and function, while heritage and cultural legacy deepen the emotional resonance. Boundaries dissolve into a natural backdrop; nostalgia whispers through an ancient spirit. The result is calming, soothing, and yet reinvigorating. When these forces align, a masterpiece is born.
The garden is wrapped in the soft light emanating from rattan lanterns. I beheld nocturnal vistas that sit at the intersection of oriental beauty and ancient storytelling. I marveled at its serenity and tranquillity, in awe of its subdued and divine presence. Time seems to stand still; The garden quietly holds the nuances and micro-changes of four seasons. Standing at the threshold of winter, I savored the crisp chill in the air, already conjuring up the quiet arrival of snow.
Elegance Redefined: Inside Exquisite Room Design, Evoking Residential Comfort
As I entered into this uncharted territory, I turned off my vigilance and allowed myself to surrender to whatever would unfold ahead. At the check-in counter, welcome tea and desert, was served as a gentle touch of hospitality, putting me at ease instantly. The ripple effect of that warmth travelled through my body. Naturally, I shifted into Japanese-speaking mode. It was a surreal yet intimate physical sensation—every time I registered a different language, a new current of energy seemed to activate, triggering a visceral, almost existential shift. Language carries the weight of humility and humanity. In that moment, a hidden yet authentic side of me retained its salience: calm, cool, and collected Lol.
A stroke of genius design, through my lens: the silhouette of the minibar embodies Japanese kimono, compelling me to anthropomorphize the minibar as an elegant lady who is wearing layered kimono. The kimono-inspired design extended to the wall sconces, both in the bedroom and on the vanity.
After check-in, I was escorted to my room—here comes my favorite part: the room tour. Knowing it was my first visit and given my affinity for room tours, the concierge lady provided a thorough and captivating walkthrough. I was particularly drawn to the way she meticulously guided me through the design details—almost painstakingly explained, lol—from the delicate shoji screens to the subtle architectural nuances. She shone a spotlight on silhouette of the minibar, an embodiment of the Japanese kimono. I have always appreciated minibars for their utilitarian aspect , yet for the first time, I was struck by its aesthetic appeal: playful, tactile, and engaging, compelling me to anthropomorphize the minibar as an elegant lady who is wearing layered kimono. A vibrant energy came alive in the space- a stroke of genius design, through my lens. The kimono-inspired design extended to the wall sconces, both in the bedroom and on the vanity, infusing a fresh and unique character and artistry into these functional elements.
Wall sconces flanking the bathroom vanity with their black-accent framing; The room is imbued with poised energy and sophisticated elegance; Unexpscted pops of color—introduced through artwork and accessories—strike moments of visual intrigue
Some small yet mighty details—such as the wall sconces flanking the bathroom vanity, with their black-accent framing—stood out to me. They anchor the space in subtle asymmetry and geometry, exuding an Art Deco radiance and glow. Wood, the protagonist material, is applied throughout, from flooring to furnitures. The room interior, characterized by pared-back design and a monochromatic scheme,is imbued with poised energy and sophisticated elegance, while unexpscted pops of color—introduced through artwork and accessories—strike moments of visual intrigue.
Aesthetic and function are achieved in harmony and balance. Comfort is emphasized across every aspect of the design, with clear zone delineation ensured through the separation of the toilet and bathroom. As an extra note, the Toto toilet—equipped with an automatic lid—delivers a seamless user experience, so much so that I found myself instinctively waiting for the lid to open at the next hotel, lol. Both the toilet and vanity areas boast a generous size, complemented by a carefully curated selection of toiletries.
This approach aligns with one of my favorite interior architects—André Fu—who revealed his top three elements that contribute to a unique hotel experience. First and foremost, timelessness is key in hotel design, given the substantial investment involved. Second is a sense of comfort, as guests come to hotel spaces to rejuvenate. The final element is relaxed luxury, signature to Fu’s design language. Luxury, he explains, is no longer about formality or ornate décor; it is about the guests’ feeling of relaxation, with the sense of luxury emanating from within.
Here at Dusit Thani Kyoto, the experience unfolds as a sanctuary-like, lived-in luxury—calming, composed, and quietly indulgent.
Certain make-or-break points are associated with my personal penchant—such as installation of lighting controls. In some hotels I’ve encountered, light switches are scattered everywhere: one for the bathroom, another by the bedside, others hidden in unexpected corners. At Dusit Thani, the lighting is methodically centralized. A streamlined control panel allows me, especially before bedtime, to turn off all lights at once—without the baffling task of hunting down individual switches.
Built upon this are an air-conditioning system with superior soundproofing and premium-quality bedding that envelops me in cloud-like softness. The result is a sense of self-indulgence, culminating in decadent, sumptuous textures to the touch. Night-sleep oils gently permeate the air, adding final elevation in a sleep ritual. Together, these elements craft a truly restorative night’s sleep—what I consider the expression of ultra-care a luxury hotel can offer.
Delightful treats and a welcome letter are displayed on the bedside table; I purchased a matcha bowl during this trip; I sank into the comfortable chair, detaching from my usual vibrant, high-energy self—the one fueled by constant motion and noise—and allowed slowness and stillness to take the reins for a moment
The room interior exemplifies a classic blend of materials, textures, and lighting, adorned with sleek wood furnishings, sumptuous textures, and soft ambient lighting. It epitomizes sophisticated yet livable luxury. Guests who temporarily inhabit the space are gently guided into a state of decompression—both physically and emotionally. Delightful treats and a welcome letter are displayed on the bedside table. As an extra note, Kyoto is renowned for its ceramic artistry, and each teacup and plate selected for sweets feels like an exquisite work of art in its own right. I even purchased a matcha bowl during this trip, which has now become part of my go-to drinking set.

The minibar offers a thoughtful array of teas and coffees. I poured a small cup and paired it with the complimentary dessert. Surrendering completely, I sank into the comfortable chair, detaching from my usual vibrant, high-energy self—the one fueled by constant motion and noise—and allowed slowness and stillness to take the reins for a moment.
A Multi-Layered Sensory and Healing Journey at Devarana Wellness
I was greeted with their signature Thai tea infused with delicate blue flowers—a visual and gustatory awakening
Devarana Wellness Center is tucked behind the manicured courtyard garden. Its interior embodies an ethos of wellbeing, radiating a restorative and rejuvenating atmosphere. Every object evokes emotion, and the space itself is designed to create an immersive sensory experience. I was greeted with their signature Thai tea infused with delicate blue flowers—a visual and gustatory awakening. Its texture was unexpectedly cooling yet refreshing, accompanied by a subtle fruity aroma that carried a calming prosperity—a prelude to the detox and holistic spa treatment that I schedualed later.
The oil selection process itself was mesmerizing and enticing, setting the stage for the full-body treatment my therapist and I finalized together
The approach was personalized throughout, tailored to my unique needs, resulting in a bespoke experience curated with ultra-care and gentle precision. After completing the assessment checklist, I met my therapist—a Japanese lady who exuded a poised aura and calm energy. She presented three types of oils, guiding me through each world of scent and its intended purpose. I engaged all my senses, fully immersed in evocative moments shaped by textures, aromas, and intuition. Ultimately, I opted for the deep sleep oil, which felt most aligned with my body and mind. The oil selection process itself was mesmerizing and enticing, setting the stage for the full-body treatment my therapist and I finalized together.
It was a celestial escape, unfolding into a transcendental experience of wellbeing. My therapist brought genuine care and an empathic touch, whisking me briefly away from the roaring engine of societal life to unwind and decompress. I was bathed in an ambiance of humility and grace, reclaiming the awareness of self-care and wellness practices. My experience at Devarana Wellness came full circle with a warm tea, perfectly juxtaposed with the cooling tea served at its inception. Intentional care and quiet humility are embedded in my multi-layered wellness journey.
That night echoed in my thoughts, archived in my memory—the air permeated with a hypnotic aroma, intertwined with a once-in-a-lifetime human connection through storytelling. It blossomed into a body-mind equilibrium, embellished with the threads of our exchanged narratives. Experiences that are seemingly fleeting or ephemeral often hold profound meaning and enduring significance for me—a moment of intimate communication with my body, a quiet, off-guard trust with the therapist, and a shared storytelling that connects oneself with both the environment and others.
Back in my room, as I descended into bed that night, I felt complete self-assurance and joy, leading to rest, recalibration, and renewal.
Morning Indulgence: The Art of Paradox—Where Momentum Emerges Within Surrender
Breakfast at Kati, in itself, stood as a testament to both the culinary pedigree and the hotel’s hospitality standard
Dusit Thani holds multiple in-house restaurants deliver a cross-cultural culinary experience—a refined blend of Thai cuisine and Japanese delicacies, showcasing locally harvested produce and craftsmanship of master chefs. Due to my short stay, I wasn’t able to experience the full spectrum of the hotel’s dining offerings. Yet breakfast at Kati, in itself, stood as a testament to both the culinary pedigree and the hotel’s hospitality standard.
Hotel breakfast has always been central to my hotel experience. A table overlooking the manicured courtyard was thoughtfully arranged for me—an unexpected gesture that elevated my dining moment. Coffee, following my morning warm water ritual, remains my go-to drink that inaugurates my day, slowly yet steadily reclaiming my energy.
Breakfast was served at the buffet, alongside an à la carte menu. I began with a light salad and fresh fruit to cleanse my palate before transitioning to the main course. Upon inquiry, the avocado benedict and French toast came highly recommended. Already more than I would typically eat for breakfast—perhaps even for lunch—I decided to indulge, prompted by the staff’s sincere and enthusiastic recommendation. Hands down, it lived up to its must try name Lol.
Here is a glimpse into Kyoto’s coffee culture ( experienced peripherally from this trip) —it's woven into layers of richness and texture in an all-encompassing sense. Each cup reflected meticulous attention at a granular level, interwoven with emotional nuance and cultural resonance. I was fortunate to encounter a unique café almost every day in Kyoto—a delightful and sensory way to kick off each morning Lol.
I am not the most discerning foodie, nor equipped to critique cuisine from a technical perspective, yet I am innately drawn to experiential moments. That morning unfolded into a symphony of gastronomy, nature, and architecture.
I felt compelled to head to the gym—to counter both sluggishness and indulgence induced by a full breakfast
After breakfast, I returned to my room and sank into the bed—sumptuously layered and inviting, yet capable of mutating into a breeding ground for midday decadence, lol. At the mercy of my itinerary, I allowed myself a brief, entirely guilt-free surrender—perhaps for mere half an hour Lol.
Thanks to my AMEX Platinum card, a 4 p.m. checkout granted me the luxury of unhurried time.
Soon, my internal switch flipped. I felt compelled to head to the gym—to counter both sluggishness and indulgence induced by a full breakfast. The hotel gym, also located within the Devarana Wellness Center, is a seamless amalgamation of spa and fitness, analogous to the paradox of modern living, where surrender and hustle coexist—isn’t it.
I found myself pulled toward the treadmill, driven by a desire to get my adrenaline running. In that moment, I was fueled by drive, motivation, and vision. In parallel, on the other side of the wall, the space still held the memory of the night before—spa rituals for rest and reset. Within this single space, I once surrendered to healing while now energized by dopamine, experiencing two contrasting modes of living.
I don’t often use hotel gyms—partly because travel itself keeps me moving, up to hundreds of thousands of steps each day, which I consider sufficient to compensate for any missed workouts. Beyond that, I deliberately deviate from my daily exercise routine, giving myself some slack to fully inhabit and embrace travel mode. Yet, it turns out a full brunch reignited my biological needs to reclaim my energy. The moment I stepped onto the treadmill, I replenish my energy and regained a sense of agency—something I need even while traveling. A half-hour run was followed by a private yoga session that stretched and reset my entire body in that afternoon.
When exercise is ingrained into your DNA, it becomes as inextricable as air or water—woven into one’s functioning, regardless of occasion, season, or rhythm. Last year, travel, as I wrote in travel in style, whisks me away from routine, landing me in a blank slate where I exercise my creative muscles to depict the utopia I envisaged. A year on, I continue to elevate both physical strength and mental fortitude, sustaining my life in the most aspirational and lofty fashion.
Reinvention may sound extravagant upon one night hotel stay, yet as my healing journey unfolded at Dusit Thani, I found myself at a state of ideal being—physically, mentally, and emotionally. I concluded my stay with a wagashi-making workshop, thoughtfully arranged and coordinated by the concierge lady.
After the workshop, I returned to the concierge to pick up my luggage. Prompted by her genuine interest, I shared some highlights of the workshop. Crafting desserts certainly isn’t my genius zone, lol, yet in that moment, I felt an almost irresistible urge to gift her one of the wagashi I had made during the workshop (I had made three in total). I’ll admit—I felt a trace of cringe offering a handmade ( ready to eat ) gift, lol. Yet she received it with sincere warmth and joy, and in return, presented me with an origami she had made herself.
It’s a memory that won’t fade—one of those sparks that rekindles the essence of travel, allowing moments to be revisited, emotions to be re-lived, and another thread to be woven into the tapestry of my life.

As I took one last, lingering glance around the lobby, its quiet grandeur and intimate warmth seemed to echo the entirety of my stay. Every detail—interior design, meticulous hospitality, and thoughtful gestures—had guided me through a layered journey of sensory delight, emotional resonance, and mindful surrender.
Dusit Thani Kyoto is more than a hotel; it is a carefully curated space where heritage, art, and hospitality converge, humility and grace shine, leaving an indelible imprint on body, mind, and soul.
As I venture into an uncharted chapter, I find myself reclaiming an inner sovereignty—shaped by an expansion of my being through new experiences.
I felt my body, mind, and soul stretched into a matrix from which they could never return to their old dimension. Thank you, Dusit Thani!
In the end, I want to share some joy with everyone— my capture of Kyoto’s maple leaves—nearing their final chapter—in early December unfolds in variations of hue, layered with emotion, and a lingering sense of crisp freshness
